How to choose, and what makes these different

Most free coloring pages are clip art with the fill removed. These are not that, and the difference is worth explaining before you spend an hour on one.

Every page is a scene, not a pattern

A repeated geometric pattern is restful for about ten minutes and then it is work, because there is no reason to prefer one part of it to another. A scene has a subject, a foreground, and somewhere obvious to start. That is why these hold an evening: there is a picture being made, not a surface being filled.

Every page has a name and a text

Under each drawing there is a short piece of writing - what the image shows, what it is about, and one question to take into the colouring. It was written before the drawing, not after. You can ignore it entirely and the page still works as a page. But if you read it first, the hour goes somewhere.

Where to start if you have not done this in a while

• Pick a page with one large subject rather than a full border. Fewer decisions, and it looks finished sooner.
• Pick the theme, not the difficulty. Interest carries you further than an easy sheet does.
• Print two copies. The first one is where you find out what you actually wanted to do.

What you need, honestly

Colored pencils and paper. A set of twelve is enough to make everything on this site look good; the difference between twelve and a hundred and twenty is convenience, not quality. If you use alcohol markers, print on heavier stock and put a spare sheet underneath. Gel pens are excellent on the dense pages and terrible on the open ones, because they take too long to cover an area and skin over.

About the paper size

The PDFs come in both US Letter and A4 - you choose when you download. It is the same drawing either way, fitted to the sheet with nothing cropped, so you do not have to fight your printer's scaling settings.

The books these come from

Fourteen titles, each with forty pages and a single subject: what flowers meant, forty shadows, a midnight garden, forty faces of the inner child, a book of small houses, dark retellings of old love stories. The free pages here are drawn from all of them, so browsing by theme will move you across books rather than through one.

Why the pages are free

The books are sold in print on Amazon. These pages exist so you can find out whether the drawings suit you before buying anything, and because a page you printed and coloured is a better description of a book than any listing photograph. There is no subscription and nothing to cancel.

A note on what these are not

They are not therapy, and nothing here treats anything. Colouring is a way of spending an hour with your hands busy and your attention narrow, which some people find useful and others do not. The writing under each page is meant as something to think about, not as advice.

Browse by theme rather than by book

The fourteen books were each built around one idea, but almost nobody arrives wanting "book seven". People arrive wanting flowers, or houses, or something for the evening. So the pages are also sorted by what is actually drawn on them - flowers, small houses, forests and water, night scenes, animals, gothic botanicals, old tales - and each of those pulls from every book at once. If you know what you are in the mood for, start there.

How long one of these takes

Longer than you think and less than you fear. A page with a single large subject is an hour with pencils. A dense page - the cabinet of curiosities, the overgrown mausoleum - is three or four evenings if you are being careful, and it is meant to be. None of them is designed to be finished in one sitting under a deadline; that is the opposite of the point.

Printing, briefly

Any home printer will do these justice. Use the heaviest paper your machine will take without jamming - 120 to 160 gsm is the sweet spot - and print at 100% rather than letting the driver scale to fit. If you only have ordinary copier paper, that is fine for pencils and a mistake for markers, which will go straight through and mark the table.

Where the drawings come from

Every line on this site was drawn for these books specifically. Nothing here is stock art, a public-domain reprint, or a pattern bought in a bundle and recoloured, which is the usual economics of free coloring pages. That is also why there are 510 of them and not fifty thousand: they were made one at a time.

What the writing under each page is doing

Each drawing was commissioned from a text, not the other way round. Somebody wrote what a particular pattern feels like from the inside - the reflex to help before you are asked, the day when every sound is too loud, the room you would like to close a door on - and the illustrator drew that. The reason it is worth reading is that a page called "The Storm" colours differently once you know it is a picture of anger with nowhere to go.

If you are choosing something for someone else

Printed pages make a better gift than a coloring book does, because a book asks for a commitment and three sheets do not. The flower and house pages travel best - they are legible to anyone. The gothic and the shadow pages are much more specific, and worth choosing only for someone you know will like them.
